How we work

Editorial Policy

How we work out the numbers, where the rules come from, and what happens when we get something wrong.

Accuracy before publication

The sums live apart from the pages that show them, so they can be tested on their own. The tests cover normal cases, the awkward edges, and every bug we have already been caught by. When a sum changes in a way that matters, we run real examples through it before it goes live.

Primary sources first

Rules come from the bodies that make them. So far the pages cite the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and each one is linked from the methodology page so you can read it yourself. We only name a source here once a page really uses it.

Plain language, with limits stated

Every result says what it counts, what it leaves out, and when it does not apply to you. PMI on a normal loan is not the same as FHA insurance, and we do not blur the two. A planning ratio is not an approval limit. An estimate is not a quote.

Review dates and material updates

The methodology and the main tool pages carry a review date. It is set by hand, not stamped by the computer, because it is a claim that a person looked at the page. We change a page when a rule we cite, a formula, a starting assumption or the way a tool behaves has changed.

Corrections

We check what you report against the code, against what the page shows, and against the official source. If it is a real error we fix it quickly. If it was a sum that went wrong, we add a test so it cannot come back.

Commercial separation

No advertiser, sponsor or partner gets to change what a calculator says or what we conclude. If we ever have such a deal, it will be spelled out next to the content it touches. Nobody can buy a place inside a result.

Who is answerable for this

This site is run by one person, Marvin Smit, not an editorial department. We would rather say so than hint at a review board that does not exist. AI tools help with the research, the testing and the first drafts. What actually gets published is checked by Marvin Smit, and he answers for it.
